Free week-long UCLan event to promote awareness
An annual film festival promoting mental health awareness is taking place at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) next week.
Now in its seventh year, the UCLan One in Four Film Festival uses the power of film to explore the effects of mental health on individuals and society.
The free week-long event, organised by UCLan’s Comensus and Service Users and Carers Advisory Group with help from local community support groups, will take place between the 7 and 11 October and show a range of entertaining but informative feature films that highlight a wide range of mental health issues.
The five films that will be screened are: The Hours, The Mars Project, Silver Linings Playbook, For the Love of Nancy and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Each film will be introduced by someone who has been affected by the particular issues depicted in the film.
Festival organiser and UCLan Honorary Fellow Russell Hogarth commented: “While official statistics tell us that one in four people experience mental health problems in the UK in any given year, mental health and mental health well-being are issues that affect us all.
“The films are chosen for their portrayal of a particular theme or mental health condition and will be introduced by a mental health service user or carer with relevant experience and insight.”
“The films are chosen for their portrayal of a particular theme or mental health condition and will be introduced by a mental health service user or carer with relevant experience and insight, framing your viewing of each film in a meaningful, real-world context. This is a wonderful opportunity to share and explore your own ideas and insights as well as learning from others.”
The entertainment begins each evening at 5.30pm in UCLan’s Mitchell and Kenyon Cinema in Foster building. Free tickets are available on the door.
The One in Four Festival coincides with World Mental Health Day, which takes place Thursday 10 October, and to mark the occasion the Open Minds and Open Hearts community event will take place in UCLan’s 53 Degrees offering a range of free creative workshops.
