Academics create must have book for designers

UCLan’s Gavin Allanwood and Peter Beare spot gap in the market for educational textbook

Two academics from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) have produced a must have textbook for digital designers after discovering a gap in the market.

Gavin Allanwood, a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader in Media Technology and Infographics, and Peter Beare, Course Leader for BSc Media Production, have created User Experience Design - Creating Designs Users Really Love.

The book, published by Bloomsbury in the Basics Interaction Design series, introduces an approach to digital design that puts human experience at the forefront of the design process. Throughout the book, they show how design skills can be improved by undertaking practical exercises and considering the needs, expectations and motivations of everyday users.

"User Experience Design can be difficult to explain, but it is about acknowledging the human who is enjoying or enduring the experiences that we create for them."

Gavin said: “User Experience Design is a collection of methods applied to the process of designing interactive experiences. Our students studying web and app design needed a basic primer on the topic, explaining the core methods and providing case studies of successful designers taking a user centred approach. Although there are already a number of books on the technical and theoretical aspects of the topic we set out to create a highly visual text that is accessible, inspirational and informative.”

UCLan Media Technology alumnus Peter added: “User Experience Design can be difficult to explain, but it is about acknowledging the human who is enjoying or enduring the experiences that we create for them. The aim of our book is to show how we can minimise the anxieties and maximise the pleasures of a variety of experiences, whether these are interactions with web-pages, electronic devices, or environments and other people.. There are many very well paid jobs available in the approach that the book advocates.”
