Students raise money for Cambodian street children

Over the past six years students on Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management courses have raised around £30,000 for the Green Gecko project – a school for street children in Cambodia.

Students work in small teams, mixing their own ideas and creativity with the management skills they learn at UCLan to present a range of different events. These have ranged from a Cambodian beauty therapy afternoon to a Chinese dating show.

In addition to raising money for a great cause, the students gain vital practical experience of project management.

Event Management student Sheilla Wakefield spoke of her trip to Cambodia: "It was a really great experience and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to be a part of such a different way of life. I've always thought about eventually living and working in another country, but the Green Gecko experience created a significant change in me and I'm now looking into taking a course in TESOL so I can do more of what I did in Cambodia and make a difference to the lives of others through teaching."
