Prestigious magazine award for journalism postgraduate
UCLan alumna’s ‘Wild’ idea
A University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) postgraduate who studied journalism has won a national award for her creative thinking.
Alice Lipscome-Southwell topped the New Magazine Concept category at the prestigious Magazine Academy awards in London.
The awards are staged by the Periodicals Training Council and are open to students from all 15 PTC accredited colleges. There are only two categories and Alice, a graduate from last year’s MA Magazine Journalism programme, greatly impressed the judges to land one of them.
The award was presented to Alice by James Povey, marketing director of PTC sponsor Polestar. “Polestar is delighted to sponsor the Magazine Academy 2009 New Magazine Concept Award and to print the winning entry. The talent and enthusiasm of all the entrants is to be congratulated and we wish them every success in their future careers."
The citation for the award said Alice’s concept for ‘Wild’, a wildlife magazine aimed at 10-year-olds, was "nothing short of brilliant".
Mike Ward, Head - School of Journalism, Media and Communication, added: “This is a highly prestigious award and within the School we’re all delighted for Alice. It is heartening to see yet another example of our graduates and postgraduates succeeding in an extremely competitive industry. All in all, it’s an amazing achievement for such a young course.”
Three Magazine Journalism postgraduate students from last year have been also short-listed for the PTC's forthcoming Student Journalist of the Year award.
