International rugby teams come to UCLan

UCLan welcomed the England Rugby League team to the UCLan Sports Arena to help them prepare for a three nation series against Wales and France.

The University welcomed the England Rugby League team to the UCLan Sports Arena to help them prepare for a three nation series against Wales and France.

The squad spent two days training at the Arena’s rugby pitches in preparation for the series and used the University’s strength and conditioning suite, which is fully equipped with new Keiser pneumatic machines and Olympic weight lifting equipment.

“I’ve visited UCLan Sports Arena several times with Wigan for pre-season fitness testing and now with England. The facilities here are top-class and allow us to be fully prepared for games.”

English international and Wigan Warriors full-back Sam Tomkins commented: “I’ve visited UCLan Sports Arena several times with Wigan for pre-season fitness testing and now with England. The facilities here are top-class and allow us to be fully prepared for games.”

Sam is one of several Wigan Warriors players who study part-time at the University on the BSc (Hons) Strength and Conditioning degree as part of an on-going sponsorship deal that UCLan has as the ‘official university’ of the Super League club. The agreement also sees the Warriors benefit with fitness tests and video analysis support from UCLan.

The Arena will also host the Irish squad ahead of the Rugby League World Cup 2013. UCLan beat off tough competition to be one of only two universities chosen as a host venue for the 14 nation tournament that will be held in England and Wales in 2013.
