UCLan Golfers Take Another National Title
UCLan golfers have gained a tremendous second national title in the space of a month.
The UCLan team, consisting of David Corsby, Andy Palmer and Colin Gaudie triumphed in the UK Students Matchplay event held at the Marriott Forest of Arden Golf Club, home of the British PGA Championship, which took place on the 2nd and 3rd of April. The format of the tournament was a two round scratch strokeplay qualifier with the top four universities then entering a team matchplay knockout. UCLan qualified strongly in second position overall and then proceeded to eliminate their rivals before meeting Birmingham University in the final.
This was an extremely close matched affair with both teams securing two victories apiece. The result of the tournament came down to a play-off final in which David Corsby held a pressure putt at the second extra hole to win and hand a well deserved victory to UCLan and their second national title.
UCLan’s victory means that the University will now represent the UK at the World Finals at the Wittelsbacher Golf Club, Neuburg, Germany on June 18th – 21st.
David Grecic, Director of the International Institute for Golf Education, enthused, “This is another amazing achievement for this group of players. At the start of the season our target was to win the league and gain the national recognition that the players deserved. To have achieved this and now gained two national titles is fantastic. The fact that our students are gaining international honours and have the opportunity to compete in the World Finals is testament not only to this team’s ability but it reflects also on the talent and strength in depth of the whole Elite Squad and the competitive framework that underpins the programme.”
