UCLan gets quality stamp for canoe coaching
The Outdoors division of the School of Sport, Tourism and The Outdoors has been recognised for its high level canoe coaching by becoming one of only a dozen Canoe Wales approved centres in North Wales.
Along with the team at Pro-active Adventure at Tyn Dwr Hall, UCLan’s outdoor centre in Llangollen North Wales, The Outdoors division had to meet the standards set out by the British Canoe Union to ensure coaches hold the current qualifications and that equipment is of a high standard.
The Outdoors division leader, Nigel Garratt, said: “Canoe Wales operates this approval scheme on behalf of the British Canoe Union. It means they have recognised our high level of coaching, resources, facilities and access to appropriate waters.”
This highly sought after status comes as UCLan’s Tyn Dwr Outdoor Centre has, in partnership with Pro-active adventure, been awarded Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) status by Adventure Activity Associates.
Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) is a quality badge mark for the centre and is dependant on the quality of activities delivered, the quality of facilities and the quality of the instructors themselves.
Peter Stacey, the inspector for Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC), commented: “Proactive has access to superb facilities at Tyn Dwr and are able to engage and deliver meaningful quality experiences to their clients through focused development of its programmes and activities, and by good use of staff skills and activity venues.”
Nigel Garratt added: “The inspectors also commended our level of consultation with teachers before their student residential and our client led approach once they are here at the centre. We are flexible and design their programme around what they require.”
