Jonathan was also recruited by West Bromwich Albion Football Club as a Consultant to their Recruitment Department in 2008 and 2009 and has also conducted evaluation work for the Football Foundation.

Dr Jonathan Magee is a Senior Lecturer in the Division of Sports Coaching and Development, having joined the staff in 2003.

Jonathan studied at the University of Ulster (BA Hons, Sport and Lesiure Studies, 1994), Loughborough University (MSc Sports Science, 1995) and University of Brighton (Doctorate Thesis - ‘International Labour Migration in England League Football’, 1998, supervised by Professor John Sugden and Professor Alan Tomlinson). Following teaching stints at University of Brighton and Roehampton Institute, University of Surrey, Jonathan attained a Lecturer post in Sports Studies at Edge Hill University in 1998.  In 2000, he accepted a Senior Lecturer position in the Cardiff School of Sport, Cardiff Metropolitan University (then UWIC) as Discipline Director in Sports Sociology before moving to UCLan in September 2003. During his time at UCLan, Jonathan has taught widely on the suite of undergraduate and postgraduate sport courses, specialising in modules focusing on the socio-cultural study of sport, sports coaching, and qualitative research methods. In 2010, Jonathan lead the validation team for the MA Sport, Policy and Community Development course. Jonathan was also Director of Studies for Anna Semens who was awarded her doctorate in March 2009 for the theses 'Player Representatives in the Football Industry'.

Jonathan's early published work developed from his doctorate and focused on sports labour migration, the football labour market and football economy. He expanded his portfolio to publish on coursing history and Irish society and sport in Northern Ireland but more recently has extended his interests to publish on sport and homelessness and disability, sport, leisure and play. Jonathan has also co-edited 'Children, Youth and Leisure: Contemporary Perspectives' (with Ruth Jeanes, 2011, LSA Publications), 'Women Football and Europe: Histories, Equity and Experiences' (with Jayne Caudwell, Katie Liston and Sheila Scraton, 2007, Meyer & Meyer) and 'The Bountiful Game? Football Identities and Finances' (with Alan Bairner and Alan Tomlinson, 2005, Meyer & Meyer).

Between 2003 and 2007, Jonathan was Chair of the Operational Group at the International Football Institute, a research partnership between UCLan and the National Football Museum. In that time he organised 'The International Football Institute 2005 Conference: Women, Football and Europe' (held at UCLan, September 2005) and 'The International Football Institute 2004 Conference: European Football: Influence, Change and Development' (held at UCLan, September 2004). Jonathan was also Co-organiser (with Ruth Jeanes) of the conference 'Reflecting on Children, Youth and Leisure' (held at UCLan, April 2010) and currently serves on the Advisory Boards for the 'Asia Pacific World Sport and Women Conference Australia 2012' (to be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in October 2012) and the 'Australia and New Zealand Association for Leisure Studies' (ANZALS) 2013 Conference (to be held at Monash University in December 2013).

In February 2008, Jonathan was recruited as a Consultant by West Bromwich Albion Football Club to be the Manager of their Player Recruitment Department. In the role Jonathan introduced a technical recruitment system for the football club to use with regard to the recruitment of elite players. He fulfilled this role until July 2009 and on return to UCLan resumed teaching and publishing duties whilst also being commissioned by the Football Foundation to evaluate case study community projects.

Jonathan acquired the UEFA 'A' Coaching License in 2000 and has coached at the University of Brighton, Edge Hill University, UWIC, the Centre of Excellence at Preston North End and the Irish Football Association. Between 2000 and 2003 Jonathan was Director of Football at UWIC, a role that included being Head Coach to UWIC Inter Cardiff in the League of Wales and Head Coach to Welsh Universities. Jonathan also coached Wales at the inaugural 2003 Homeless World Cup in Graz, Austria. As a football player, Jonathan respresented Northern Ireland at all levels up to Under 21, Northern Ireland Universities, Irish Universities and British Universities and was a competitior at the 1991 World Student Games in Sheffield, the 1993 World Student Games in Buffalo and the 1995 World Student Games in Fukuoka.
