Kate is the Strategic Director of Nottinghamshire County Drug and Alcohol Action Team, and has been since December 1995, co-ordinating and delivering the Government’s National Drug Strategy in Nottinghamshire County – Nottinghamshire is one of 149 Drugs Partnerships in England.  Kate’s Senior Management role within the Notts County DAAT has been responsible for commissioning Criminal Justice, Adult and Young People’s Treatment Services, and has been the lead in “gender specific” services and work with “Young People’s specific treatment”, provision including focus on working with young offenders, young travellers and young people in rural and ex-mining communities.  Notts County DAAT is a large County DAAT and is an Intensive DIP DAAT focusing on crime reduction and access to treatment, which has won an award for “The Sherwood Project”.

Kate has been at the forefront of commissioning, supporting services and community engagement through the involvement of service users and parents and carers.  She has worked in the substance misuse treatment field both in the City and rural communities and has also worked in the Probation Service as a qualified Probation Officer since the late 1980’s. 

Kate joined the University of Central Lancashire in the Centre for Ethnicity and Health, now ISCRI in September 2003. ISCRI is a specialist research and education centre with a focus on the health and social care of diverse groups who experience discrimination and/or disadvantage, including Black and minority ethnic communities, refugees and asylum seekers, offenders, people with disabilities, mental health service users, lesbians, gay men, bisexual and transgender people, older people and young people at risk of developing health and social harm. The Centre utilises both qualitative and quantitative research methods in such a way that its work has practical applications and its findings assist in the evaluation and improvement of services and community relations. The Centre is an acclaimed model of community engagement of National recognition.

As a Director of Community Engagement, Kate is leading the alignment with the 9 Government Regions to ensure sustainability of the Black and Minority Substance Misuse Community Engagement Projects, across the U.K. with the University of Central Lancashire.  Over 200 Black And Minority Ethnic Community Engagement Projects have been funded across the UK and support given through the Community Engagement Programme – sponsored by the Department of Health, Home Office, NOMs, NIMHE and the Welsh Assembly.

Kate is also a Non-Executive Director on the National Treatment Agency Board.    Kate has been one of the Non-Executive Directors of the National Treatment Agency since July 2001 appointed by the Secretary of State.

Kate is a Trustee of a national charity called “MoMo Helps”. This is a national charity set up by Mo Mowlam.  Mo Mowlam launched her charity to provide easy access to fund and plug the gaps for those families who are identified as in need.  The fund provides opportunities and respite for the families and carers of children, young people and adults who are disabled and also offers essential support for recovering drug users assisting their rehabilitation into the community and allowing them to regain confidence as individuals and/or as parents.

Kate received an OBE in the 2009 New Years honours list for her work with disadvantaged people.
