Karen works part-time as a Principal Lecturer and Senior Researcher with a particular focus on mental wellbeing, mental health and equalities and has a broad range of research interests.

Karen has over twenty five years experience of mental health and NHS service provision, commissioning, consultancy and research. She originally trained and practiced as a Clinical Psychologist in the NHS for 16 years. From 1996-1999 Karen was the lead commissioner for mental health services for East Lancashire Health Authority. She subsequently joined the Centre for Mental Health Services Development at King’s College, London to establish the North West Mental Health Development Centre. Since 1999 Karen has been involved in supporting organisations to develop and improve the outcomes for people experiencing mental health problems and has led on service redesign and organisational development, consultancy and research commissioned by a broad range of health, social care and voluntary organisations. From 2006-2008, Karen co-led the national programme for gender equality and women’s mental health for the Care Services Improvement Partnership. Karen is currently completing her PhD at the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences on evaluating the implementation of the National Service Framework for Mental Health. Her recent publications include:
