Jane has been working in the drug research field since 1988 and became a Professor of Substance Use Research in 2005. She is a research consultant for several international organisations, her work has been widely published in academic journals, and she has edited several books.
Jane’s work uses mainly qualitative research methods, which have been most often used to research drug use, drug treatment, and other drug-related issues, particularly amongst so-called ‘hidden’ or ‘hard-to-reach’ populations and those vulnerable to problematic drug use.
Most recently, Jane’s research has focussed on addressing drug-related issues amongst a wide variety of Black and minority ethnic communities in the UK and internationally, with a particular emphasis on the risk factors for problematic drug use that are associated with social exclusion. This research has included studies amongst specific Black and minority ethnic populations, such as asylum seekers, those in prison, and those identified by the criminal justice system with the supply of illicit drugs.
A crucial element of the research projects Jane designs and consults upon is that the key findings are presented in terms of practical recommendations, to ensure that service provision is able to reach a diverse client group and is in keeping with relevant policy and legislative drivers.
As a lead on research at ISCRI and chair of the ISCRI Ethics Committee, one of Jane’s major responsibilities is to work with and support all teams within the school to ensure that high quality research and publications are produced, in order that ISCRI maintains and enhances its national and international reputation.
