National Policy Seminar Series ME2PN - Minority Ethnic Elders Policy Network Interim Report
An interim report has been produced in respect of the lottery funded Minority Ethnic Elder Policy Network Forum (ME2PN) delivered by PRIAE (the Policy Research Institute for Ageing and Ethnicity) and I.S.C.R.I (the International School for Communities Rights and Inclusion) at the University of Central Lancashire.
The purpose of the network is to recruit and support BME elders to become involved in a range of policy initiatives with a view to influencing future strategies and action plans thus ensuring that these are inclusive and responsive to their views and needs.
Five regional seminars were organised in the summer and autumn of 2009.
This report summarises the outcomes from these seminars.
Managing Better Mental Health Care for BME Elders Project
The Policy Research Institute on Ageing and Ethnicity (PRIAE) is supported by the International School for Communities, Rights and Inclusion.
This project aims to:
- collate and co-ordinate examples of good practice, including mental health support developed with the BME age sector – particularly specific aspects of mental health issues and solution.
- train BME elders and workers to deliver appropriate support.
- develop the capacity and confidence of the BME mental health and social care community, using well-developed and recognised models of community engagement.
The interim report summarises the outcomes achieved at three seminars held in March 2009.
There are a number of follow up actions and next steps that you may be interested in:
At the seminars in March Professor Ajit Shah talked about a number of guides that he was writing for BME elders and mental health professionals. These are now complete and Professor Shah will be running a series of training events as below.
