Introduction

The religion of Islam touches the lives of over a billion people around the world in complex and powerful ways. Islamic Studies as an academic discipline provides critical insights into Islam through a consideration of the central belief systems which shape the lived experiences of Muslims across the world. ISCRI currently provide the following three courses at undergraduate level:

Undergraduate Courses

Combined Honours Islamic Studies

This Subject is offered as part of the Combined Honours Programme; it is a three year full time course and must be taken in combination with other subjects.  By the end of the Islamic Studies Course, students will have a secure understanding of the basic tenets of Islam as found in the sacred texts (the Quran and Hadith literature), an appreciation of Islamic law and philosophy and important insights into Islamic history, with a particular focus on the early period and how this has impacted the nature of Muslim communities both historically and in modern times. This is further supported by an opportunity to understand Muslim social issues and tensions within multicultural settings such as Britain. Students will also be introduced to classical Arabic.

Part Time Courses

University Certificate in Islamic Studies

This short Certificate in Islamic Studies offers students the unique opportunity to develop an informed understanding of the Islamic religion, heritage and culture, and to examine the way in which Islam shapes the lived experiences of Muslims in England today.
It will be of particular interest to individuals who work either in the public or the private sector and come into regular contact with Muslim clients. The course will also appeal to those who, as a result of recent events, wish to find out more about the Islamic faith

One Day Course

Developing Cultural Awareness

This short one day course will of particular interest to you if come into regular contact with Muslim clients as part of your work. If you work in the public sector (for example, the local authority, the NHS, Police force, Probation Service, Prison system, Fire service, etc.), the voluntary sector or the private sector and you wish to develop an informed understanding of Islam and Muslims in Britain then this is the course for you.During the course you will have the opportunity to explore a range of factors which influence and define the life of Muslims living in Britain. This includes:
• Key beliefs and pillars of Islam
• The prophet (pbuh)
• The Quran and other scriptures
• Islamic attire
• The role of the mosque in Muslim communities
• Key issues facing Muslims in Britain
