Undergraduate courses
UCLan offers a wide range of nuclear courses. This section provides information on our undergraduate provision and linkages to the main course information pages.
Productivity and the sustainability of the nuclear industries are dependent upon the availability of suitably skilled, trained and qualified employees. UCLan Nuclear recognises that the nuclear sector needs highly skilled people who are able to contribute, innovate and take organisations beyond their current ambitions and to support corporate goals in what is an increasingly aggressive global market place. Employers supporting our programmes recognise that to retain the current workforce, the industries must work to ensure that the skills and qualifications held maintain their currency and are also the skills and qualifications required to meet changing industry needs.
The undergraduate course range covers a variety of levels, from HNC, Foundation Degree to Bachelor Degree. The courses offer study pathways from one qualification to the next. Our top-up to Honours degrees are available for those students taking foundation degrees. Foundation degrees offer the possibility of working while studying and our industrial partners support and promote them.
A high percentage of the nuclear industry workforce operates at higher skills levels (managers, professionals, skilled trades etc.). At entry level to the industry, there is a dependence on generic provision, i.e. provision not designed specifically to meet the needs of the nuclear industry. The industry’s preferred entry route for professionals is to engage experienced graduate level staff from other industries, and to then provide opportunities to gain the additional skills and knowledge related to nuclear. UCLan has recognised the niche and developed its FD in Nuclear Decommissioning that started in September 2006 and was offered by the Lakes College, West Cumbria to the Sellafield site employees and since then introduced Fd Science in Nuclear Project Management and Control Provision which is one of the most popular courses in the West Cumbria delivered at the UCLan Westlake Campus.
BEng Nuclear Engineering
The BEng Nuclear Engineering is the top-up to the FdEng Nuclear Engineering. It will be delivered part-time over two years by UCLan Nuclear in block mode from 2013 from either at Preston and or our Westlake Campus. We are currently developing for validation BEng Top-up Honours Progression routes for Nuclear engineering and Project Management. We anticipate to recruit for 2013.
Foundation degrees in Nuclear Engineering
The FdEng Nuclear Engineering has two streams FdEng Nuclear Engineering (Power Generation) and FdEng Nuclear Engineering (Decommissioning) which are delivered directly by a network of partner institutions who receive quality assurance through UCLan. Currently, these partner institutions include Blackpool and Fylde College, Bridgwater College in Somerset, Coleg Menai in North Wales and Sussex Coast College Hastings, and other colleges proposing to deliver the course include Lakes College in Cumbria, West Suffolk College and Lancaster & Morecambe College. These programmes are delivered on part time basis either through day release or block mode over a period of three years, based on college’s client expectation.
HNC Nuclear Engineering
The HNC Nuclear Engineering is also a part-time course that is equivalent to the first two years of the FdEng Nuclear Engineering. It is also offered at partner colleges of Blackpool and Fylde College, Coleg Menai and Sussex Coast College Hastings.
We are currently recruiting for September 2012 intake for the following courses.
Foundation and top-up honours degrees
