Llangollen Campus
Tyn Dwr Hall in Llangollen puts UCLan right at the heart of the UK’s leading outdoor pursuits arena, with three national outdoor centres in the region: the National Whitewater Centre at Bala, Plas Menai on the Menai Straits and Plas y Brenin at Capel Curig. As North Wales accounts for around 40% of outdoor pursuit activity in the UK, by having such a presence in the area and working more closely with the outdoor industry, UCLan can better equip its students with the skills needed for a successful career in outdoor related areas.
Dr Adrian Ibbetson, Academic Director of Sport regards this acquisition as a major step forward in improving the University’s facilities. He said “UCLan is now consolidating its position as one of the UK’s largest universities and adding a further dimension to an all-round learning experience for our students". In September 2008 the University lauched its ambitious new outdoor degree programme. Providing a base for this course, Preston campus offers students great study, sport and leisure opportunities with a range of locations for the practical elements. As well as indoor facilities in Preston for climbing, kayaking and swimming, the south Lakes and Yorkshire Dales are in easy reach for climbing, walking, kayaking, and caving. Block residentials also take place in Llangollen, the Norwegian Alps and Spain (for sailing and water-sports).
The University has implemented an upgrade costing circa £3 million on the buildings and facilities in Llangollen and now offers top class accommodation in addition to the outdoor facilities.
