Why Work at UCLAN?

Employment Benefits

As a large employer, it is important that we ensure our staff are rewarded in the best way.

UCLAN has great terms and conditions and an excellent benefits package available that helps to attract, motivate and retain the best people to drive forward the University’s mission and corporate objectives.

Our benefits package is under constant review, the main benefits you will enjoy include:

• Pay and Salary Progression

The University has recently introduced a highly competitive pay spine and grading system covering all roles. Increments within a grade are normally awarded on the 1st September each year.  Progression through the incremental points is subject to satisfactory performance.

• Pensions

All staff have the option to join an occupational pension scheme (Local Government Pension Scheme or Teachers Pensions Scheme).  This means that the University contributes to the pensions of its staff.  The schemes can provide a tax free lump sum and a pension on retirement and other benefits, such as cover for dependants and death in service grants.
Support staff are eligible to join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS). The contributions of staff for superannuation purposes are approximately 6% of gross salary, securing a pension on retirement calculated on salary and years of service, subject to a minimum of 90 days contributory service.  Newly appointed staff will automatically be included in the Scheme unless they make a declaration to opt out.  Details of the Local Government Pension Scheme will be issued upon appointment.
Academic staff are eligible to participate in the Teachers Pensions Scheme.  Newly appointed staff will automatically be included in the Scheme unless they make a declaration to opt out.  The employee’s contribution for superannuation purposes is currently 6.4% of salary.  Details of the Teachers Pension Scheme will be issued upon appointment.

• Do you have a charity giving scheme?

UCLan has operated a GAYE scheme since 1989, this can be organised via our Payroll department on joining.

• What happens if I have to move or relocate?

We operate, in certain circumstances, a removal/relocation scheme to assist new staff.  Full details will be provided to the successful candidates if appropriate.  An indefinite appointment is offered on the basis that you will be expected to acquire, or continue to possess a normal place of residence within a reasonable distance from the University.

• Development

In a big organisation with plenty of training and development activities, career progression opportunities are available for everyone.  We also offer opportunities to study and may be able to help with course fees and time off for study. As well as the above benefits it is important to us that our employees work in a comfortable environment and achieve a good work-life balance. See below for how we help you to achieve this.

• What is the working environment like?

Since 2004 we have invested hugely in providing a modern teaching, working and leisure environment.  As a result we have spacious, contemporary buildings, with leading edge facilities.   Almost 90% of our staff has said that they are proud to belong to the University.  We are also a very diverse organisation.  We have many staff from overseas and over 100 nationalities are represented in our student body.

• Hours of Work

For a full-time academic post teaching at HE level, the formal scheduled teaching responsibilities should not exceed 18 hours in any week or a total of 550 hours in the teaching year. Teaching hours will obviously vary depending on your role and will be agreed to balance your other scheduled activities which could, depending on your role, include academic research, leadership or knowledge transfer activities.  The nature of a full-time academic post is such that appointees are expected to work such hours as are reasonably necessary in order to fulfil their duties and responsibilities.

The normal working week for our other full time staff is 36.25 hours.  This will vary in some instances to take account of specific role requirements.  Many jobs in the University are compatible with our flexitime scheme, which means you can fit work around the other things in your life.

• Holidays

We offer generous annual leave of 30 days for support staff or 35 days for academic staff, plus statutory holidays (eight) and four discretionary days per annum. The leave year commences on the 1st September.  The annual leave entitlement is pro-rata for part-time employees.

• What opportunities are there for flexible working?

We are open for business all year and have posts which are full time, part time, term time only, evening work and weekend work.  All our posts are considered open for job sharing unless clear business circumstances require otherwise.  Many support posts in the University are compatible with our flexitime scheme.

• Facilities

Staff members have access to the University’s outstanding facilities. Our £12 million outdoor sports arena was opened in April 2000, featuring an 8 lane athletics track and the only premier league standard pitch in the public domain, in addition to grass pitches, all weather floodlit pitches, netball/tennis courts, a cricket square and pavilion, covered training area, cycle circuit and fitness suite.

Staff are automatically members of the university library and learning resource centre, which has over 1,000 PCs giving access to over 200 state-of-the-art applications. We are one of only a handful of universities to have our own independent cinema. The 110-seater facility was officially opened in 2006 and is named after the early Edwardian, Blackburn-based film makers Mitchell and Kenyon. The award winning Students’ Union, 53 Degrees, is one of the largest and best resourced in the UK and features many top bands.
