Rules & Regulations
In this section you can find information about about Academic & Student Regulations, The Card, Conditions of Residence, Plagiarism and the UCLan Students' Union opt out form. Please click on the links above, or in the left hand menu, for more information.
When becoming a student at the University, you agree to comply with the various regulations, rules, codes, conditions and policies ("The Regulations") that pertain to students from time to time. This page provides you with information concerning the core Regulations that apply to you while studying at UCLan. You will find a short explanation of each Regulation, contact details for further information and a web link for you to access the Regulation in full. As a student you are bound to abide by each Regulation in full, it is therefore important that you take some time to familiarise yourself with each Regulation.
This page whilst containing the core Regulations pertaining to students, is not exhaustive. Should you wish to access other Regulations, Rules and Procedures these are available in the Library and Learning Resource Services, relevant Departments and Services and elsewhere on this website. You will also receive a course handbook from your course tutors which applies the Academic Regulations more specifically.
The Card:
The Card will be given to all students this year. It represents a clear statement of the University’s intentions to deliver agreed standards for academic and administrative services. It spells out what is expected of students, how they act and behave with each other and members of staff. It reinforces the contribution they need to make to get the best from their time at UCLan. The Student Organiser, which is distributed to all students, also provides study advice.
The Card will be discussed with every new student by their Personal Tutor during the first meeting of the academic year. This will provide an early opportunity for further explanation where necessary. Opportunities may be taken by all staff to refer to the statements on the Card throughout the year.
For example, if student behaviour becomes a problem you may need to reinforce the point that students must abide by the Academic Regulations in the University (see Resources at end of notes), and that talking rudely in class, or using mobile phones inappropriately are not proper conduct, and the students may be subject to disciplinary measures. Every member of staff has the right to give informal oral warnings about unacceptable behaviour, and the University will support staff by invoking formal procedures where necessary.

- Not committing plagiarism
(Reinforce induction sessions being run on plagiarism by clarifying the definition and the consequences - Plagiarism Appendix 9: Academic Regs ) - Keeping up to date with course information through UCLan email and other channels
(Reinforce your department’s/college’s preferred method of communicating with students and how frequently they should access these channels) - Using the feedback you are given to improve subsequent work
(See the Feedback to Students pro forma to assist this process – Appendix 14: Academic Regs ) - Making appropriate use of teaching staff’s time
(Reinforce the importance of students preparing for and keeping their appointments with tutors, and developing independence in their learning process) - Taking responsibility for your personal development planning and skills development
(Reinforce why this is important and how the department/college embeds the processes within their programmes) - Treating staff, fellow students and neighbours in the local community with respect at all times
(Reminder that we are living in a mixed community and we should behave in a way that does not bring us into disrepute with our neighbours)
Text of the Card : Guidance to staff
We aim to:
- Start and end all classes on time
(Ensure that classes start on the hour and finish 10 minutes before the hour) - Give you one week’s notice of changes to your classes
(Your department/college will have a process of notification for staff and students on changes) - Give you feedback on assessed work within 15 working days
(Reinforce with students that feedback can take a variety of forms. Make sure that you clearly identify when feedback is being given. Emphasise the importance of acting on feedback.) - Give you clear, legible and informative feedback on your work
(Individual written feedback will be given on all assessed work – see Section G3.7: Academic Regulations) - Be available for timed appointments
(Staff will be available for a minimum of 3 hours per week – see Departmental/College guidelines for details on how your local appointments system works) - Treat you with respect at all times
- Support you in your preparation for the work place
(Different programmes prepare students in different ways in the development of, for example, time management, team working, career management, problem solving. Clear and explicit reference to this process will help students to make the linkages between university study and the workplace. See Resources at end of notes)
