Getting About

How accessible are we?
• The Preston Campus is near the city centre and is convenient for public transport.
• Burnley Campus is near the town centre and railway station.
• Westlakes Campus is situated on Westlakes Science and Technology Park, just south of Whitehaven on a bus route. There is a railway station in Whitehaven where taxi services are available.


Residential Accommodation

You have to liaise directly with the Student Accommodation Service about your requirements. They will take professional advice on the allocation of adapted rooms.

• You will be sent details of how to apply on line from the Admissions Office.
• You will be given extra consideration if you have a disability or medical condition that requires you to live on campus.
• All University accommodation is self-catering.
• The University has a register of private sector accommodation and will help you if you prefer to live there.
• A number of rooms in Halls of Residence offer one or more of the following:
- specially adapted bathroom
- emergency pull cord in bedroom
- red flashing lights for D/deaf students
- alerter systems for D/deaf students
- private shower
- kitchens designed for wheelchair users
• If you are assessed as needing assistance with daily living, your personal assistants may be accommodated, provided that, if they are in University accommodation, you sign an extra University contract on their behalf.
• Assistant dogs can be accommodated.
• While there are not yet Halls of Residence in Burnley, the University can assist students in finding accommodation.


Safety, Health and Environment

Depending on the nature of your disability, it may be necessary for Disability Advisers to share some information with the University Health, Safety and Environment Section and/or the Student Accommodation Service.


Assistance with daily living 

• The University does not provide assistance with daily living, but Disability Advisers work closely with you to provide advice and information about settinstudent in kitcheng up suitable arrangements.
• You may need help with day-to-day activities such as washing, cooking, shopping, laundry, dressing etc. Such personal assistance must meet with the University’s standards to ensure you are properly supported and can study effectively.
• Different sources of funding are available from external agencies and arrangements should be made on an individual basis.
• Contact your local Department of Social Services at the earliest opportunity.
• You can access the University’s Personal Care Policy for more information.


Access to Learning Fund

The University’s Access to Learning Fund (ALF) may be able to give you assistance where there is a shortfall in your income/expenditure. We can also assist with cost of assessment for specific learning difficulties.


Students’ Union Advice Centre

The Students’ Union Advice Centre is located in the Students’ Union on Fylde Road. We can give advice on various subjects, including academic issues/independent advice, funding, debt, benefits and housing. We have drop-in sessions; you can come in during these sessions and ask to see an Adviser.
 

Catering

• The main restaurants in Foster and Harrington buildings both have wheelchair access.
• There are accessible food outlets and vending machines situated across the University.
• Our friendly staff are happy to help.
• Special diets are catered for upon request.
• Burnley Campus has two accessible food outlets.

Car Parking

• You must have a valid University permit in order to park on University car parks. This is free for blue badge holders. A blue badge alone is not sufficient.
• At Burnley Campus you also need a valid access card.
• Facilities are adjacent to most buildings and include bays for blue badge holders.
• We regret we are unable to reserve you a place. However, our attendants will be pleased to assist you where possible.
• Parking enforcement is in operation.
