Tackling Honour Based Violence and Forced Marriage 23rd April 2010
Tackling Honour Based Violence & Forced Marriages
Friday 23rd April 2010, Darwin Lecture Theatre, University of Central Lancashire, Preston
The Forced Marriage (Civil Protection) Act 2007 was enacted on the 25th November 2008. It aims to provide civil protection for the most vulnerable people at risk of forced marriage and aims to send out a clear message to all communities that forced marriages will not be tolerated. The government anticipated that around 50 Forced Marriage Protection Orders would be issued in the first year – 86 were actually issued. However, it is also acknowledged that it is still underused and agencies need to be doing more as many victims remain isolated.
Blackburn County Court is one of fifteen courts authorised to issue protection orders under the Act. The Act offers courts wide discretion in the type of injunctions they make to enable them to respond effectively to individual circumstances for both those at risk and those who have been forced into a marriage.
This conference aims to look at the national and local picture in relation to protecting people. Leading figures will share good practice & examine the challenges we face in order to improve local responses and develop working protocols and consistent responses to those issues.
