Fire Safety
If you discover or suspect a fire....
• operate the nearest red fire alarm call point
• dial 333 on your way out of the building or sue the green or red telephone situated at the main entrance and inform the telephonist of the location of the fire
ONLY STOP TO TACKLE A FIRE IF IT IS SAFE TO DO SO AND YOU HAVE BEEN TRAINED. NEVER RISK YOUR OWN OR ANYONE ELSE'S SAFETY
Fire Procedure
In order to ensure the well being of all building occupants the following procedure must be followed.
• leave the building by the nearest available exit closing the doors behind you
• do not stop to collect personal belongings
• do not use lifts
• assemble on the designated areas as specified on the blue fir notices displayed in various locations within buildings
• you must not re-enter the building unless told to do so by the Fire Officer or University Emergency Officer
Fire Alarm Testing
The fire alarms within all buildings are tested on a weekly basis by Campus Officers/Security. Notification of the day and approximate time will be posted within the main entrance of each building. The test involves activating the fire alarms for a few seconds to ensure that the system is operating and to familiarise occupants with the sound of the alarm.
Means of Escape / Fire Doors
It is essential that means of escape are kept clear in all University premises, so that in an emergency people can exit a building quickly and safely.
The majority of doors on campus fitted with a self-closing device are fire doors. The provision of fire doors is required by the Building Regulations and under Fire Certification. They are there to protect the building and its occupants by providing resistance to the passage of fire. Therefore in order to be of use they must be kept closed. Please do not wedge open self-closing doors.
Fire Drills
The University conducts two fire drills every year. In general, the first drill will take place during October and the second after the Easter break. All staff, students and visitors are asked to co-operate by following the fire procedure as if the situation was an emergency.
Fire Marshals
The University trains a number of staff as Fire Marshals. More information can be found on the Fire Marshal web page Link.
