2012 Guild

Welcome to the eLearn Support Site

Blackboard is Coming!

ELearn the university’s virtual learning environment (VLE) will be moving from WebCT CE8 to Blackboard Bb9.1 in August 2012!

Why are we upgrading?

We last upgraded the system in 2009 and the use of the system has grown considerably since then.  As with all other systems, the software supplier has developed their software and plan to de-support the present WebCT version 8 in 2012. The University is therefore required to upgrade the system in order to maintain an eLearn provision and to remain current. The new version (Release 9.1) is Blackboard’s Next Generation Teaching and Learning Platform and contains the “best of both worlds” between Blackboard and WebCT.

All courses will be delivered through the new VLE eLearn (Blackboard 9.1), from the start of the Academic Year 2012/13.

All live modules now on eLearn (WebCT) will remain on that system until the end of July, but tutors will be able to access the new Blackboard spaces in advance to familiarise themselves with the new version and learn about its exciting new features.

Staff can keep up to date with the Blackboard Upgrade on the eLearn Staff Intranet pages.

Opening Microsoft Office documents in eLearn

We are aware that there is currently an issue with opening Microsoft Office documents in eLearn – e.g. Word, Excel, Powerpoint if you are using Internet Explorer 9 (IE9). This issue is related to IE9 not being compatible with the version of eLearn (WebCT CE8) currently in use at UCLan.  Until this problem is resolved, you can use one of the alternative browsers: Mozilla Firefox is available from the Start>All Programs menu and you can install Google Chrome using Install a Program from the Network.

What is eLearn?

eLearn is the brand name for the on-line Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) that UCLan has implemented to support and enhance teaching and learning.

A Virtual Learning Environment is defined by JISC Infonet as 'a collection of integrated tools enabling the management of online learning, providing a delivery mechanism, student tracing, assessment and access to resources'.

Looking for support?

You can use the links on the left to select the appropriate support information for you.

Support for staff is designed for UCLan staff who teach, support and administer their courses using eLearn.

Support for students is designed for all those studying using eLearn. This includes staff who are registered as students.

The eLearn Technical Checklist covers browser set-up,  supported software, etc. Try this page if you are having problem getting access to eLearn.

What is the difference between WebCT, eLearn and Blackboard?

In 2006 WebCT was bought out by Blackboard and the brand name of the product was changed. eLearn is the name of UCLan's Virtual Learning Environment and the current version is CE8.0.03 (Campus Edition).

How do I access eLearn on a computer at UCLan?

Once you have logged on to the UCLan network you can go to the eLearn web page. This will take you straight into eLearn.

Please note: when you log out of eLearn you will see the login page. If you want to login again then you need to use your UCLan network username and password.

When you first login to eLearn you will see a Warning - Security message about the application's digital signature. You need to select the Run button and select the Always trust content from this publisher if not already selected. See the image below.

Can I access eLearn when away from UCLan (off campus)?

Yes, you can login via the eLearn login page.

Please refer to the eLearn Technical Checklist for more information about using eLearn off campus.

I am having problems logging into eLearn - what am I doing wrong?

  • You may not be entering the correct username and password. Remember that passwords are case sensitive. Students can reset their UCLan network password if necessary.
  • You may also have problems logging in if you have created your own bookmark or favourite to access eLearn. You must follow the bookmark information on the eLearn login page.

If you are still having problems then please refer to the eLearn Technical Checklist.

How do I change my password?

You can change your password on the following web page whether you are on or off campus: https://webutilities.uclan.ac.uk/WebFormPwdChange.aspx

Alternatively if you are logged into a UCLan PC you can change your password via the Start, All Programs, Utilities, Change Password option.

Please note: when you change your eLearn password it will change for other UCLan services - e.g. the UCLan network and Remote Access.
