Following the completion of his undergraduate studies, Graham qualified as a teacher and worked briefly in Secondary and Further Education before returning to complete an MSc at Lougborough University. This led to a career in Higher Education, starting as a lecturer and progressing to be a Head of Department before joining UCLan in the same role in the Lancashire Business School. During this time, Graham also obtained a Doctorate from the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Wales, Bangor. He joined the University's Senior Management Team in 2003 and held posts as Dean of Academic Innovation, Director for Cumbria and Dean of Academic Development.
In March 2007, Graham was seconded for twelve months to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Sellafield Ltd as the National Skills Research Director. His role was to assist the organisations with workforce development and to advise with regard to the emerging skills agenda. He was involved in helping to develop skills plans and in developing a strategic action plan for on-going interaction between education providers and the industry.
He rejoined the University in March 2008 taking up the position of Pro Vice Chancellor (Skills & Employer Engagement). He was appointed as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic (Acting) from 1 January 2010 with overall responsibility for the University’s academic activity. He leads the Directorate Academic Team working with the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) and the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching). Graham sits on the Lancashire Employment and Skills Board, the NDA’s National Skills Working Group, the Board of Lancashire Sport and the Board of Kendal College. He has undertaken University audits on behalf of the Quality Assurance Agency and has extensive experience as an external examiner currently undertaking the role at two Universities. As part of his Deputy Vice-Chancellor role, he is Executive Chair of Westlakes Scientific Consulting.
