Leaving Home
Living in another country is a big step. We have listed information to remind you what you should do before you take that step.
Before you leave home
Checklist:
- Valid passport (check the expiry date on your passport)
- Tier 4 (General)/Student visa or entry clearance (Residence Permit) (See UK Council for International Students and Foreign & Commonwealth Office websites)
- Airline ticket / online booking information
- Offer letter from the university stating acceptance on a full time course
- Tuition fee payment and living expenses
- Immigration: you will need evidence of financial support to cover tuition and living expenses: bank drafts, receipts, proof of scholarship or sponsor’s letter
- Enrolment: evidence you have paid your tuition fees – keep all bank transfer details, receipts showing payment
- Accommodation: evidence of payment
- Opening a bank account: a bankers draft or cheque made payable, in British Pounds Sterling, to you. (If possible, bring a bank statement from the bank in your home country)
- Vaccination: please make sure you vaccinated before you travel to the UK.(More information on Meningitis C and Mumps)
Important! You will need to show the above documents to the Immigration Officer on arrival in the UK - carry them in your hand luggage in a safe place or on your person.
You will also need:
- For your first few days in UK: About £300 in cash. DO NOT CARRY LARGE AMOUNTS OF CASH
- Travel insurance
- Health Insurance if you are planning to be in the UK for 6 months or less
- Medical and dental records if appropriate and vaccination certificates
- Completed and returned card with accommodation payment and a copy of card
- Six passport-sized photos for after you arrive
- Arranged transport to the university from the airport
- Arranged accommodation for when you arrive if you have not booked university accommodation such as local hotels: Holiday Inn, Legacy International Hotel and Premier Inn etc.Please note that a UK Standard Single Bed 3ft x 6ft 3in / 91 x 191cm.
