Overseas applicants must be currently registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Course Content

This is a level 2 course and consists of two modules, NU2205 Assessing Patients with Renal Impairment and NU2206 Support in Renal Care and Treatment. Knowledge and skills in relation to the modules are introduced, developed and enhanced over the duration of the course. Professional aspects, the impact of national and local policy, and the management of care delivery are also explored.

The course also requires you to make a commitment to private study time; this will generally be between 6 and 12 hours of study during each week of the programme. This allows for reading, library time, working towards assignments and reflection on practice. Contact with other students will be encouraged, as this will enhance your experience as a student on this course. You will be expected to actively participate in discussions and relate theoretical concepts to your own clinical experiences.

Assessment

Theory assessment is by written assignments, presentations, oral viva and examinations. Clinical practice will be assessed by a clinical competency schedule and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).

Learning Environment

In the University, students will learn through a variety of methods including lectures, demonstrations, group activities (e.g. discussion), Personal Development Planning (PDP), problem solving, case studies and web based resources. Learning in the clinical environment is central to the course and integral to student development.

Careers

There are a number of opportunities available for those with an Advanced Certificate Nephrology Care. These may range from providing an opportunity for both personal and professional development; promotion within their own clinical setting, to working within and across care boundaries. There is an ever increasing emphasis on evidence-based practice within healthcare and the need for a sound rationale on which to focus clinical intervention. Furthermore an increased awareness of the consumer ethos has developed within the service and there is a greater need for all healthcare professionals to work in collaboration and co-operation with each other.
