Sports Therapy
This MSc course will interest those students with a previous degree in sports science or related subject, wishing to develop therapeutic skills appropriate to use within a sport and exercise background. It is designed to build upon and synthesise the understanding graduates have in principles of sports science and fitness training, with the addition of therapeutic and rehabilitation skills necessary to become a sports therapist. The course has been developed with the Society of Sports Therapists. Successful completion enables full membership of the society and hence the professional indemnity insurance necessary for practice. The aim of the course is to synthesise therapeutic skills in: sports first aid, soft tissue massage, the early management of injury, exercise and rehabilitation, manual therapy and electrotherapy, with previous sports and exercise knowledge. The course has both theoretical and practical content with various methods of assessment. Students are able to work in the University Sports Clinic.

Entry Requirements
Applications are sought from individuals possessing a 2:1 or equivalent classification degree in sport science or related subject area. Candidates not possessing a first degree but with a relevant qualification will be welcomed, following an informal interview. Overseas students require an IELTS of 6.5 or above for this course
CRB Checks
This course may involve regular access to children and/or vulnerable adults, also known as regulated activity. Where this is the case, students will be legally required to register with the Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) which is administered by the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). Following successful registration individuals will be issued with an ISA Registration Number which will stay with that person for the rest of their career. If you are not already registered, UCLan will take you through the process.
Course Content

Skills such as sports first aid, soft tissue massage, the early management of injury, exercise and rehabilitation, manual therapy and electrotherapy will build on the underpinning sports and exercise knowledge that the appropriately qualified graduate possesses.
The use of therapeutic modalities and exercise, together with a sport specific focus, leading to a functional return to competition or activity is the main focus of the work of a Sports Therapist.
The course has been developed via collaboration with the Society of Sports Therapists. Successful completion will enable the student to apply for full membership of the Society, which carries professional indemnity insurance, a necessity for anyone wishing to work as a Sports Therapist. Assessment:
The degree utilises a variety of assessment strategies, including case studies, presentations, assignments, literature reviews, practical demonstrations and a dissertation.
Learning Environment:
Learning will be through student participation in practical workshops which will enable you to critically evaluate and reflect upon the practical skills you are being taught. You will be asked to develop problem solving skills which encourage originality of thought and design. Students will be expected to develop their therapeutic skills through working within the University Sport and Exercise Injury Clinic and delivering sports first aid to University and local clubs.
Careers:
The course provides graduates with the competencies to work as a self-employed therapist or within the health and fitness industry, professional sport or sports/health related research.
