International Hospitality and Event Management

The programme has been designed to provide a high quality management education for existing managers and those with an appropriate undergraduate education who wish to aspire to a career in the dynamic area of international hospitality and event management. The emphasis throughout this programme is on the development of professional and managerial skills. The research element of the MSc comprises a supervised dissertation on a relevant topic. Enhancement activities throughout the programme will include academic skills development, external speakers, industry visits and may also include a residential learning event.

Entry Requirements

Students require a good honours degree (or equivalent) in a subject related to hospitality, tourism, business or service sector management. It would normally be expected that this degree be awarded at the level of lower second class or above. Other graduates who can demonstrate a commitment to the study of tourism management or who have significant industrial background will also be considered for entry.

Course Content

This course has been designed to provide a high quality management education for practising managers and those with an appropriate undergraduate education who wish to aspire to a career in the dynamic and highly transferable area of international hospitality and event management. Current hospitality trends and market analysis are used to illustrate the competitive environment within which changing event provision and expansion can be successfully delivered. Therefore the emphasis throughout the programme is on the development of a wide range of professional and managerial skills linked to key themes within the area of international hospitality and event management. The modules have been selected to ensure a blend of theoretical and practical issues within both a managerial and a subject specific context.

Furthermore, the application of key management skills throughout the hospitality sector is considered from an organisational viewpoint whilst also seeking to aid personal growth and development. As such, today's industry continues to evolve in response to the changing market forces that serve to continually differentiate creativity and innovation within managing the optimum customer experience possible.

The growing size and dominance of hospitality as the major employer around the world means that companies and organisations are continually seeking individuals with the knowledge and capabilities of managing a variety of aspects throughout this dynamic and expanding industry. This is a 12 month programme comprising three parts. The first two parts are the taught element and the final part is consists of research and writing the dissertation element. The taught element focuses on key aspects of hospitality and event management.

For full-time students, the taught element is normally completed over a nine month period starting in October. Part-time students will normally attend on a one day a week basis and complete the taught element in two years.  Students who complete the taught element of the programme, in part or in its entirety, may graduate with either a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in International Hospitality and Event Management. Students wishing to complete the MSc in International Hospitality and Event Management must complete the research element, which comprises of a dissertation. Full-time students will normally complete this in the three months that follow the taught element, whilst part-time students complete this during the course of an academic session.

Assessment:

Assessment includes reports, essays, presentations and seminar papers and for those completing the Master of Science Programme, a Dissertation.

Students will find the teaching and learning environment worthwhile and challenging.  The learning environment is organised to ensure that key concepts, theories, and where appropriate, practices relevant to management in the hospitality and event industry form a central role in teaching and learning.

Careers:

Upon completion of the MSc in International Hospitality and Event Management, graduates will be able to interface with a variety of service sector organisations within the private, commercial and public sectors from around the world.
