Entry requirements for postgraduate courses vary and you are advised to check for any specific requirements with Enquiry Management and on our website. Normally the following general entry requirements apply:

Postgraduate Diplomas, Certificates and Conversion Courses:
A recognised British first degree or its equivalent, or a BTEC Higher Diploma/Certificate.

Taught Masters Courses:
A recognised British honours degree to a good standard, or its equivalent. Applications from all candidates will be considered on their merits and in the light of the nature and scope of the programme or work proposed. Informal enquiries are welcomed and will normally be followed by an initial advisory interview.

Participants should have substantial work experience (normally at least five years), as described in a detailed curriculum vitae. They should possess a good honours degree (normally 2:1 or above), or equivalent professional qualification. Mature applicants will be considered with extensive experience. A statement of 250-500-words is required, describing the relevance of the programme to your work, your goals for the course and how you will apply the learning in your context. Evidence of appropriate computer literacy and internet access is also needed.

Course Content

Taking the step to join the Journalism Leaders Programme will give you the chance to choose from a range of modules aimed at helping you develop the knowledge and skills to contribute to organisational strategy, lead creative multimedia projects and teams, manage people and operations, and conduct applied research.
Once accepted to the programme, you set the pace and level of participation.

You can elect to attend a specific five-day seminar only, or earn academic credit for the module by joining in an additional series of 9 weekly online discussions and completing a set of projects linked to your workplace.

You can earn a single module certificate or work towards one of the following university awards: postgraduate certificate (3 modules), postgraduate diploma (6 modules) or Master of Arts in Journalism Leadership (6 modules, plus a dissertation or project).

The Journalism Leaders Programme recognises that professionals need lots of flexibility if they are to balance the competing demands of work, home and studies. That’s why we offer an innovative  mixed-method approach to learning which enables practitioners from across the globe to join in while continuing with their careers.  Our week-long on-campus residential seminars are scheduled in the Autumn, Winter and Spring. If you  choose to engage in nine additional Webinars hosted on our multichannel e-learning environment and complete a set of applied projects, you can earn academic credit for each module. That gives you the option of working towards a postgraduate certificate (three modules), a postgraduate diploma (six modules) or the Master of Arts in Journalism Leadership (six taught modules + research thesis or project).

Assessment:

Solution-based learning approach offers a range of assessments that allow you to demonstrate ability to apply critical insights & theoretical knowledge to professional practice. Residential week includes: individual & group assignments, followed by take-home applied projects that give you a chance to provide immediate value to your organisation.

Learning Environment:

Taught modules for academic credit are offered over 10 weeks, which include a combination of background reading, intensive face-to-face residential sessions in Preston, extensive online contact using our multi-channel e-learning environment and applied assignments.

Careers:

A course module that will help you plan your career is available as a free choice module (called an elective), which you can study as part of your degree programme.

We also tailor our courses to corporate groups and create custom training solutions to support organisations as they devise and implement the
strategies required to thrive in the Digital Age.

Gilbertson Excellence Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded to UCLan undergraduates in their final year of study in 2009-10 who want to continue their studies at postgraduate level, either on a full time or part time taught programme eg MA or MSc, or on a research programme such as an MPhil in the 2010-11 academic year. These awards worth £3,390 towards tuition fees are available to Home/EU students achieving a first class honours degree at UCLan in 2009-10 and are subject to specific terms and conditions.

Participants can choose to pay for each module as they go.

UK and EU student rate

Individual module fees:

  • 20 (1.0) credit modules - £750 each
  • 60 (3.0) credit dissertation module - £1500

Total for:

  • Postgraduate Certificate: 3X£750 =£2,250
  • Postgraduate Diploma: 6x£750 = £4,500
  • Master of Arts: 6x£750+£1500 = £6,000

International student rate Individual module fees:

  • 20 (1.0) credit modules - £1038
  • 60 (3.0) credit Dissertation module - £1557

Total for:

  • Postgraduate Certificate: 3X£1000 = £3,114
  • Postgraduate Diploma: 6x£1000 = £6,228
  • Master of Arts: 6x£1000+£1500 = £7,785
