Additional Information

What do students think about this course?

‘We received clear, concise and informed tuition’

‘The teaching is excellent…clear, precise and helpful, with lots of feedback for students’

‘There was in depth class contact and detailed lectures which gave a clear explanation of the course material’

‘The practical design elements of the course are applicable to actual day-to-day design taster in the work place.’

What careers can you follow?

Most of our students, who are part-time and are already employed in the industry, embark upon our course to gain a competitive edge. However, our full-time students go on to find careers in consultancy, design, contracting, project and maintenance, team leading, and research and development with local authorities, manufacturers and equipment suppliers.  Students can also continue their intellectual development by academic study to a higher degree and/or other professional qualifications.

What work experience can I get?

Most students are already in work but our full-time students are encouraged to spend an optional 48 week sandwich placement in the industry (between Year 2 and 3) in roles such as CAD operator or draughtsperson. Using the optional placement year extends the development of a professional approach and the successes after graduation.

What are our graduates doing now?

One graduate is an associate director in a consultancy practice; another is a maintenance manager for a hospital in Leeds, while another is a senior designer for a contracting organisation.  Another graduate is an energy manager in a hospital.  Many of our graduates have also secured roles as senior engineers.

What international opportunities are available?

Our course is delivered and validated by UCLan at universities in Hong Kong, Singapore and Athens.  We take students to Hong Kong for a week on exchange and also to the ASHRAE conference in the United States.

Want to know more about this course and subject?

The successful completion of the course helps ensure candidates are officially by the Chartered Institution of Building Service Engineers.

One week workshops are included in each of Years 2–5 of the part-time mode, but are also available to those students on alternative modes of study.

Workshops allow students to work individually or in groups on a variety of themes designed to complement the regular course material and in a manner not normally available to part-time students.  These workshops form part of the assignment package for the course.
