Course Content

The BSc(Hons) Sports Therapy degree programme offers students the opportunity to study the theoretical underpinning and practical skills necessary to enable the injured athlete's return to full function and sport.

The course will incorporate the following themes:

  • Acute management of injury both on and off the field of play
  • Prevention of injury
  • Recognition, evaluation and assessment of injury
  • Management, treatment and referral of a wide range of injuries
  • Rehabilitation within all stages of injury
  • Education and counselling.

The course is underpinned by the study of theoretical concepts and knowledge in the fields of physiology, psychology, pathology, exercise rehabilitation and manual therapies. There will be an emphasis on the use of manual therapy, massage and sports specific exercise as therapeutic components of a rehabilitation programme.

There will be opportunities for training in IT, communication and presentation, interactive and group skills, problem solving and research skills.

Students are required to demonstrate proficiency in therapeutic modalities.

There is a significant practical component to the course which will involve moderate levels of exercise. Students will have to complete a number of hours of clinical practice as sports first aiders and in the final stages of the course in a sports injury clinic. This may require weekend, evening and vacation work. There will be opportunities to gain sports coaching and sports first aid qualifications.

The course has been developed via collaboration with the Society of Sports Therapists. Successful completion will enable on application full membership of the society, which carries professional indemnity insurance, a necessity for anyone wishing to work as a sports therapist.
