Media Management
In the early stages of the course, you will follow a common programme of study which includes management theory, public relations, accounting and an introduction to the media industry. Thereafter, you gradually specialise your marketing, human resource management and PR skills to a back drop of challenging and varied digital journalism modules. You will look at global media economics, the broadcast and print industries, exploiting the digital future, business strategy and the digital newsroom. This leads on to opportunities for independent study and student-initiated projects and dissertations.

The University's minimum standard entry requirement for degree-level study is a 12-unit profile, made up from one of the following:
- At least two A2-level subjects
- One A2-level subject plus one single award Advanced VCE
- One double or two single award(s) Advanced VCE
Other acceptable qualifications include:
- Scottish Certificate of Education Higher Grade
- Irish Leaving Certificate Higher Grade
- International Baccalaureate
- BTEC National Certificate/Diploma

Applications from individuals with non-standard qualifications or relevant work / life experience who can demonstrate the ability to cope with and benefit from degree-level studies are welcome. Course Content
Media Management: an introduction to the media industry and the business acumen that it requires
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Identify and apply key business and management theories, including human resource management, marketing, operations and business communication, within an international media context
- Demonstrate knowledge of media industry structures, including ownership and markets, and fundamental developments including digital media applications
- Demonstrate knowledge of English spoken, written and listening skills potentially to equivalent of IELTS 7.
- Gather relevant information and identify significant issues and themes, as well as practical digital skills.
- Conduct critical and systematic analysis and construct sound arguments leading to evaluations that respect evidence and alternative perspectives.

This module analyses the media landscape and develops in students the marketing knowledge and skills to exploit its potential
Business Communication in Context
This module develops analytical skills and critical awareness through in-depth study of business communication theory and practice, in the context of specialist areas of business communication.
The Digital Newsroom
This module prepares students with all the practical editing, sourcing and digital skills necessary not only to survive in a modern newsroom, but for the final year project.

Business strategy
The module aims to provide students with a background in business analysis and strategy development.
Global Television Markets
This module gives students the chance to understand the global television market, the growth of international co-production and trends in international programming.
Exploiting the Digital Future
This module analyses the impact of digital technology on media businesses and scopes the future opportunities created by continued technological advances in the media sector.
Electronic marketing
This module equips students with theory and practice of electronic marketing.
The Digital Project
The module aims to provide students with the opportunity to undertake a substantial piece of independent digital work.
You will also be given a range of options in the third year to specialise in the HR or PR routes. English is studied intensively throughout the three years with an aim of IELTS 7.0.
Assessment:
Through the course you will be assessed through a variety of modes: essays, examinations, seminar presentations and the independent dissertation. No Media Management module will carry an examination worth more than 50% of the total assessment.
Learning Environment:
The Media Management course is delivered through a combination of one-hour lectures and one or two-hour seminars; it is assumed that most of your time will be spent in personal study. The dissertation and project offers the most substantial opportunity for independent research.

The Media Management course is in its second year and is eager to see students progress not only into industry but also into further study. Employment in media organisations, as well as with international corporations as PR, HR or media executives would be highly appropriate.

Money Matters
For guidance, in 2010 the University's tuition fees for full-time undergraduate courses are £3290, but are subject to increase in line with inflation. You can choose to take out a loan and pay after graduation when you are earning over a certain amount, currently £15,000 per year.
In addition, for 2010 entry UCLan is offering bursaries worth £500 to all UK full time first year undergraduate students, where the principal earner's gross salary is less than £60,000 a year. Where students qualify for the maximum maintenance grant, this will be £319. There will also be Excellence scholarships available in some specialist areas, Achievement Grants and funding available via UCLan Plus to support a wide range of curriculum activities.
