Additional Information

What do students think about this course?

‘The qualification and final placement really helped me to prepare for my job application and interview. I was offered a job in the team where I was on placement. Brilliant.’

‘Great final placement with statutory experiences; it was very challenging but rewarding.’

‘Staff in the School are supportive, encouraging and have a background in social work.’

‘I enjoyed the course. It was difficult but worthwhile. It has helped me gain professional status. I am now studying a Post Qualifying Course at UCLan.’

‘Lectures and seminars are relevant to social work and well thought out. I particularly enjoyed input from service users and carers.’

What careers can you follow?

The Social Work degree is a professional training course which is accredited by the General Social Care Council.  Graduates can enter a career in social work working with children and families, youth justice, older adults, mental health, community care, children and adults with disabilities, education welfare, and substance misuse.  This may be in a variety of settings in the statutory sector or in a vast range of voluntary and independent agencies.

What work experience can I get?

The course is structured around 200 days spent in three practice placements in a variety of social work agencies.  Students receive intensive preparation for their social work placements.

Students undertake a 30 day placement in year 1; an 80 day placement in year 2 and 90 days in year 3.

The School has well established links with statutory, voluntary and third-sector agencies.  All students on placement will receive high levels of support from practice educators and tutors.

What are our graduates doing now?

Recent graduates have successfully gained employment in social work teams in a variety of settings.  Many students were able to apply for job vacancies in the agencies in which they did their final year placement.  Other students were able to gain employment in other social work settings such as parenting and family support teams, youth justice, community drug teams, community mental health teams. Some graduates returned to the School to undertake post qualifying courses for experienced practitioners and continue their academic study.
There is a high level of graduate employability for students who have successfully completed the Social Work degree. Recent examples include one graduate who completed a final year placement for a local authority child care team who has obtained a full-time post in an adoption team to prepare and assess prospective adopters, and support adoption placements.

Another graduate who completed his final year placement within a community project for homeless people now works as a social worker in a homeless voluntary agency in Manchester.

After graduating, another student is working full-time for a hospital discharge social work team in Cumbria.

Leading adoption charity After Adoption has strengthened its team with the appointment of Gareth Twose as Business Development Social Worker to help establish a network of agency partners for the charity’s Inside Outside programme. Initially joining After Adoption as a Social Worker in 2006, Gareth has worked closely with Inside Outside since its launch in August 2007 and this promotion will see him continue working to develop the programme, as well as looking to increase the number of partner agencies involved. Inside Outside was initially set up as a pilot project to provide support and advice to birth mothers in prison, but due the significant results achieved in HMP Styal and HMP Low Newton, After Adoption is keen to continue running the programme to help imprisoned birth mothers deal with the trauma of separation from their children through compulsory adoption.

My training at Uclan prepared me to face and deal with different sometimes difficult situations. The skills and knowledge I obtained from my 3 years training gave me confidence when dealing with cases no matter how complex they are and challenges they present. As a qualified Social Worker, I have worked in different Teams within the Local Authority. This presented me with an opportunity to interact and work with professionals from different disciplines. I have worked with consultants, doctors, nurses, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists (multidisciplinary working) most importantly with service users and their families. The main objectives being to promote individuals' rights, protect the vulnerable, empower those who feel powerless and to support people to live independently in their communities. I can confirm that my training at Uclan equipped me with the necessary knowledge and skills to achieve these objectives. Of vital importance is to observe the legislation, agency policies, professional ethics and values to ensure good practice.
Paul Ndlovu

What international opportunities are available?

In Year 3 of the course, students study a comparative European module  and attend a conference during which guest speakers from various partner European universities discuss models of welfare that operate in their own countries. This provides an interactive and informative forum to understand how social work functions in other international settings.

In addition, students can access the ERASMUS scheme, which provides students with opportunities to travel to UCLan partner universities in Poland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Portugal.

Students may also seek funding to undertake academic study in various countries. One student successfully obtained research funding which enabled him to spend three months, during the summer, researching the welfare of children and young people in residential care in Bulgaria.
