Course Content

This programme of study is focussed on generating creative ideas for a range of challenging briefs. In the first two years, students are taught how to develop their visual language skills in problem solving, through creative thinking and exploring the use of type and image. First year Graphic Design students work alongside the Digital Graphics students in learning about idea generation. This also helps engender a strong creative and competitive dynamic as students develop and learn together. Students will generate ideas for a wide range of graphic design applications covering both digital and print platforms. These include identity, branding, advertising, packaging and editorial. All final year graphic design students exhibit their work in an end of year degree show, which is open to the public in June each year.

Assessment:

Each brief is critiqued at a given deadline and verbal feedback targets weaknesses and strengths. Advice will be given if more work is required in order to pass. All work is assessed at the end of the modules.

Learning Environment:

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to challenge existing methods of generating ideas and problem solving by setting briefs that stimulate creative thinking and encourage risk taking. Each brief sets out a specific design problem and will be taught through lectures, group seminars, practical demonstrations, one to one tutorials and critiques, followed by guided self-study.

Careers:

We have an excellent employment record with previous graduates working for some of the UK’s top Graphic Design agencies whilst others have established their own creative design companies. Many graduates have successful careers within the wide area of Graphic Design, from advertising agencies to multi-disciplinary design groups.

Additional Information

What do students think about this course?

Mark Arrowsmith said: ‘I found the creative thinking and idea generation that underpins the Graphic Design course really enjoyable and challenging. It opened my eyes and gave me a real insight into what it means and what it takes to be a highly creative designer.’

Kerry Ostermeyer said: ‘I look back on my university days with great fondness where I met a lot of my closest friends, learnt a lot about myself and developed a healthy passion for all things design. I had the best ending to my university life by winning a D&AD Typography commendation, along with Karen Hughes, who now works for The Chase.’

Steve Owen said: ‘Firstly, the way (the university) goes about teaching design is very pragmatic and industry focused, with an emphasis on creative thinking rather than pure design. This is massively attractive to employers as the ability to think, decipher and creatively solve is much more difficult to develop on the job than the ability to make it look nice.  Secondly, because the name has always been synonymous with a certain type of student/way of thinking, it helped me cut through thousands of applicants and secure a placement at The Partners.’
