Course Title:

Fashion Promotion with Styling

Since the 1980s, BA (Hons) Fashion Promotion at UCLan has gained an excellent reputation throughout the fashion industry for producing innovative, creative and professional graduates. Building on the success of the Fashion Promotion course this pathway offers students the chance to explore fashion styling in the context of fashion promotion. Throughout the course students have the opportunity to attend presentations and career talks given by visiting professionals from the fashion industry, to participate in client-led briefs and stage live events.

The course will be of interest to students who want to pursue a career in the visual communication industries such as fashion styling and art direction in addition to PR, visual merchandising, fashion buying, and events or brand management. Employability skills are developed and integrated at all levels of the course through modules, projects and workshop. This is supported by ‘futures’ at UCLan, a service which offers both student and graduate career support.

Course Content

Level One - Year One
Year One introduces students to the field of Fashion Promotion and its role throughout the fashion and fashion related industry. Projects involve visual and market research, introduction to styling, creating promotional literature, trend and colour analysis and developing skills in computer graphics and photography. Complementary modules make up half of the programme of study in the first year and include Introduction to PR and the Media delivered by the School of Journalism, Media and Communication, and Design History which provide a context for fashion. In addition an elective of the individual’s choice of subject is taken during this year. During the first year and part way through the second, Fashion Promotion and Fashion Promotion with Styling students study together.

Level Two - Year Two
This year students study the fashion promotion industry in greater depth and develop campaigns for fashion. Year Two will also enable the student to explore fashion imagery by examining the contribution it has made to the contemporary fashion system. Greater emphasis is placed on collaborative work both internally and externally with their peers and professional contacts in industry. Students will be also expected to source appropriate materials for styling work and build contacts which will enhance their ability to create fashion imagery. Complementary studies in Design History continue with an elective being offered at this stage. Throughout years two and three students have the opportunity to attend presentations given by visiting professional people from various areas of the fashion promotion industry.

Year Three
In Year Three the Fashion Promotion with Styling modules will incorporate projects that will cover various aspects of market research, commercial and editorial styling and trend and colour forecasting. Each student will be encouraged to develop their work on an individual level, interpreting the project to maximise their own skills, talents, interests etc, which will ultimately achieve a creative, focused portfolio or 'book' of images. This body of work will be supported by a personal theoretical investigation in the student’s chosen area. Show Production will allow you to develop further practical skills in fashion event planning and management. Students are also encouraged to develop their entrepreneurial skills through a business module. In order to exhibit your final portfolio to its best advantage, final year students will be expected to present portfolios along with their peer group in an exhibition. This exhibition will be part of UCLan's Art and Design Week where all art and design courses show their work to external examiners, university executives, family, friends and the general public.

What do students think about this course?

Andrea Billing said: ‘…the visits and guest speakers very beneficial. For example, for a specific module we did field work in Paris which was a great way to research, and it subsequently influenced my final portfolio. Exhibiting and visiting Graduate Fashion Week at the end of our course was also a brilliant achievement and allowed us to network with other people from the fashion industry.

‘The tutors not only had knowledge of the subject but also a lot of experience within our chosen field. There was a genuine strength of support which didn't end as a graduate. We still have contact – the tutors have a genuine interest in what I am up to and tell me about employment or work experience opportunities.’
Kate Geaney said: ‘Amazing support from the course leaders throughout the whole three years...with constant feedback on progress.   Also after graduating job, opportunities are emailed to us.’

Exchange student from the USA, Sebastian Ross said: ‘Coming to a new country and studying abroad was something I was very nervous about, but the tutors and students in the Fashion Promotion and Styling course were very welcoming. They taught me so much about the fashion industry, as well as arts, culture and what it takes to succeed in a creative fashion career. I was very sad to leave.’
