The Key features of our UCLan Westlakes campus are:
A global university in a local setting
The UCLan Westlakes campus has created a node in West Cumbria on international networks of knowledge, skills, expertise and commerce. It links individuals, institutions and ideas from round the world into Britain’s Energy Coast, increasingly through the international activities of UCLan, one of the UK’s largest Universities. These global links are reflected in the courses we teach, the research we undertake, and links into local industry, policy and the wider community.
Developing a research community in West Cumbria
UCLan already undertakes research in West Cumbria in energy, globalisation, tourism and applied policy sciences. It is UCLan’s intention to develop a broader research community, through studentships and original and applied research in collaboration with local businesses. UCLan has research partnerships with the National Nuclear Laboratory and the new Dalton Cumbria Facility in West Cumbria.
Locally delivered flexible education
All taught programmes at the Westlakes Campus take into account employability and employer and student needs. They use tools such as remote access to resources and e-learning tools to enhance the student experience.
Links with local employers ensure courses offered are relevant to Cumbrian needs
UCLan has links with key local employers, especially in nuclear, energy, health, business and tourism. We are continuing to develop these links as part of our on-going programme of employer engagement. We work with employers to develop programmes that are relevant to their industries and to the needs of local people, whilst still having the accreditation and national and international links that a major, globalised university can bring.
Focal point for innovation and business development
The UCLan Westlakes Campus is be a focal point for innovation and business development, not only through the activities of the business incubation and support facility but also through industry exhibitions and conferences, regular lectures and insights meetings. UCLan collaborates with organisations like Ways into Successful Enterprise to hold events and activities promoting enterprise.
A resource for the wider community and businesses
UCLan makes a positive impact on the communities in which it operates. From providing conference, exhibition and meeting facilities to hosting conferences and community forums, from undertaking research in social and scientific issues affecting local communities, to creating employment and enhancing the employability of local people, the UCLan Westlakes campus is an asset to the local community, businesses, policy community and social enterprises.
