English literature

Studying English Literature offers you access to a range of skills that are valued by employers, as well as an opportunity to engage with traditional and innovative writings, from the medieval era to the present day. You can study English Literature as a single or combined honours course, and our students have the option to link with a range of other subjects including English Language, Journalism or Creative Writing. As a student of English Literature, you will learn to be clear, concise and coherent in your written and oral communications and to be sensitive and careful as a listener. Studying English Literature (and we include television, film and radio, and of course books, as forms of ‘literature’) will also enable you to develop key skills in research, analysis and critical thinking. Our students follow a wide range of careers, for example, in teaching, journalism, librarianship, editorial and other aspects of publishing, the travel industry, creative writing, and graduate training programmes at key retailers.

“I studied BA Hons English Literature single honours at UCLan, graduating in 2008. My time at UCLan was fantastic. The course offered such a variety of areas for study that I was able to choose a curriculum that supported my interests. I couldn’t have asked for a better course team; they were incredibly supportive, whilst always challenging students to really push themselves to reach their potential. My degree studies encouraged me to pursue a career in Higher Education Student Support services. Since graduating I have embarked on my M.Ed. Professional Practice and currently work as a Subject Librarian. I wish to support future students to ensure that they have the same fantastic University experience that I was lucky enough to have."
