Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes

If you are an international student hoping to study on an undergraduate or postgraduate course in the UK, a Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes course will help you:

  • To improve your English Language (e.g. grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation)
  • To improve your academic English skills (e.g. for writing assignments, understanding lectures, participating in seminars, reading books and articles, making presentations)
  • To develop the study skills you need to succeed (e.g. a more independent approach to learning, participating in group work, managing your time, identifying and using sources of information)
  • To improve your social English and understanding of British culture
  • To get to know other students from around the world as well as the UK

Students who successfully complete the Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes course, at the required level for their chosen degree programme, will be deemed to have met the English language requirements for their course at UCLan and do not need to take an additional IELTS test.

Course Outline:

Depending on the Course you choose 20 or 25 hours per week in the classroom focussed specifically on improving your academic English language and skills including:

  • Writing for academic purposes
  • Grammar and vocabulary for academic purposes
  • Academic Lecture skills
  • Debates and discussions
  • Academic reading skills
  • Critical thinking
  • Pronunciation work
  • Studying in the UK
  • Study skills and techniques
  • Tutorial support to focus on your individual needs
  • Social and Cultural English so that you get the most out of your life in the UK

Learning Environment & Assessment:

The Language Academy and UCLan provide students with the state-of-the-art facilities needed to support your academic studies, as well as the services to help you enjoy your UK and university experience.

All students will be enrolled onto ‘blackboard’ which provides electronic resources available to enhance your learning outside of the classroom.

Computer labs are available for our students to use for free in either the Worldwise Centre or the 24-hour library.
