The development and application of emerging technologies within the often contradictory constraints of safety, economy and the law is addressed within this course. If you are aiming for a senior role in safety engineering for oil and gas industry, this is the course for you. You’ll gain a thorough grasp of the fundamentals of safety engineering; practical experience in the use of state-of-the-art techniques for the study of safety engineering systems, together with an understanding of the necessary scientific, engineering and technological principles. You will get the chance to work with oil and gas engineering companies, all with the aim of boosting your employability when you graduate.
You will be entering a diverse and exciting area of engineering where you will benefit from UCLan’s investment in the Engineering Innovation Centre which is due to open in 2018.

UCLan requires all undergraduate applicants to have a minimum attainment of five GCSEs at grade C and above, or equivalent, (including Maths and English). In 2017 and beyond we will view the new Grade 4 as being equivalent to a C grade and will therefore require students to achieve GCSE Grade 4 or above. However, if the subject is relevant to our degree programme and requires a higher GCSE grade (e.g. GCSE B grade), and/or includes a Professional body that governs the entry requirements, Grade 5 or above may be required.
Developed and run by a recognised Centre of Excellence for safety engineering, our innovative and intellectually stimulating course has been developed in consultation with employers and professional bodies like Energy Institute, Institution of Fire Engineers and is underpinned by the research done in the Centre for Fire and Hazards. You will benefit from our dedicated fire and safety engineering laboratories equipped with state-of-art equipment for small and intermediate scale facilities. You will get the chance to work with oil and gas engineering companies, all with the aim of boosting your employability when you graduate.
Safety Engineering graduates are in greater demand than ever, industrial losses continue to spiral upwards nationally and globally, whilst technological developments introduce ever more complex problems. Major incidents, such as the Piper Alpha Disaster in 1988, Buncefield Oil Storage Depot in 2005 amongst others elevated the importance of safety engineering.

The course is supported by an Industrial Liaison Group which reviews and provide input into the development of the course in order to ensure that it meets the needs of the oil and gas industry. Our Industrial partners also contribute to some teaching through guest lecturers, CPD events, and research projects. Invited lectures were done by representatives from Energy Institute, Institution of Fire Engineers, Shell, BP, GexCon, Fire and Rescue Services, Tyco, BRE, Horea Lea, Carbon Trust, Government Office for the North West and others.
After the first recruitment, it is planned to invite Energy Institute (EI) for Engineering Council (EC) accreditation for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, workshops, laboratory work, project work, case studies, site visits. The mix of teaching methods is designed to motivate, challenge students considering different learning styles to maximise their potential. Personal study also forms an integral part of the course. You will learn by a variety of methods including innovative information and communication technologies and practical case studies based on research outcomes achieved by the School staff.
It is possible to take the Industrial Experience Module after the completion of Year 2 (Year 3 if Foundation Entry route is taken) and such work placements provide valuable experience to both UK/EU and overseas students alike.
All students are able to apply for international trip funding, including to our partner institutions – International College of Engineering and Management in Oman and City University of Hong Kong.
Skills gained will equip graduates for a career as a senior safety specialist in a number of high hazard industries including oil and gas facilities, product safety engineering, process safety and chemical plants but the course is also relevant to occupations including regulators, insurance assessors and others. Because this course is supported by an established research base and continues to demonstrate a strong, well co-ordinated industrial link, the course content is highly relevant and current –which means our graduates are extremely desirable.
A number of our graduates continue with us on research degrees (MPhil/PhD) studies within the Centre in Fire and Hazards in areas of fire and explosion safety engineering, fire modelling, computational fluid dynamics and others.
