Why study this course?

The future security of our energy supply is one of the most pressing issues society faces today. This course prepares future energy engineers for the challenge. It’s your chance to get real-life practical industrial experience in this rapidly-growing field, and work your way towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status faster. With the support of our highly skilled teaching staff, you’ll gain the contemporary technical design, power generation and operations skills you need to increase energy efficiency and further develop renewable sources of energy. This course is firmly industry-led, meaning you’ll graduate with the skills and knowledge you need to engineer a sustainable future. With the MEng, you’ll get all the benefits of our BEng programme with an extra year to deepen and embed your knowledge, further your real-world, hands-on industrial experience (and therefore improve your employment prospects on graduation) and take you closer to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. 


Entry Requirements 2017/18

112 Points at A2 including Maths at C & Physics at C or STEM at C
BTEC Extended Diploma: Distinction, Merit, Merit including Maths units.
Pass Access Course: 112 UCAS Points
International Baccalaureate Diploma: 28P
IELTS: 6.0 with no component lower than 5.5
GCSE: 5 at grade C including Maths & English or equivalent

UCLan requires all undergraduate applicants to have a minimum attainment of five GCSEs at grade C and above, or equivalent, (including Maths and English). In 2017 and beyond we will view the new Grade 4 as being equivalent to a C grade and will therefore require students to achieve GCSE Grade 4 or above. However, if the subject is relevant to our degree programme and requires a higher GCSE grade (e.g. GCSE B grade), and/or includes a Professional body that governs the entry requirements, Grade 5 or above may be required.

Professional Accreditation

This course is new and will be assessed for accreditation by the appropriate professional bodies on completion of the first cohort.

Learning Environment and Assessment

Curriculum design is informed by the research, scholarship, and engineering activities of the staff, in line with the established criteria for accredited engineering degree programmes. Industrially relevant applications and examples of the material are essential to student understanding and future use. Delivery methods and curriculum design evolve in response to generic and discipline-specific developments, taking into account educational research, changes in national policy, industrial practice and the needs of employers.

You will have the opportunity to join the Innovation Club and work with a diverse group of students and staff on innovation projects, and take part in specialised group projects using complex systems.

Assessment is wide ranging depending on module: e.g. assignments, examination, projects, presentations and debates.


Energy engineering is a growing discipline and graduates are in greater demand than ever, which means your options within the sector are varied.
