Why study this programme?

Having produced commercial success stories, such as 50 Shades of Grey, self-publishing is now a highly successful and respected business model for both new and established authors. This dynamic course, the first of its kind in the world, reveals how to make self-publishing work for you.

Perhaps you are an independent author who wants to retain full editorial control and/ or a higher percentage of royalties? Or you have a completed draft of a book and you'd like to understand your options? Or you are interested in setting yourself up as an independent author and want to know more about the processes and costs involved?

Learning Environment and Assessment

We believe in doing it, not just talking about it and in that spirit we have set up the only fully operational, commercial publishing house run by students on the course. This is housed within the state-of-the-art Media Factory. Learning is mainly through interactive lectures, seminars and workshops.

Assessment is by coursework. This takes the form of essays, presentations (individual or group), reports, critical reviews, in-class essays, or portfolios of work/learning logs.

Progression Routes

Students who complete the MA Self-Publishing may choose to undertake a PhD at the University.

Work Experience

We try to offer many students with the chance to do a project abroad. Previous students have done book projects with communities in the Arctic, Zambia, Kenya, Greenland, Australia and Fiji.

Learning Outcomes

We aim to develop publishing professionals who are independent thinkers and doers and give them the practical skills to be a self-published author.
