Why study this course?

Immerse yourself in the concepts and applications of the building blocks of civil engineering on this degree course. Our civil engineering course, founded with strong industry links, is different in  respect of our unique location, situated in a region which boasts  a wide range of cutting-edge engineering and technological-advanced organisations. You’ll be equipped with the principles and concepts of engineering, underpinned by a sound knowledge and understanding of scientific principles. You’ll be taught by research-informed teaching staff and will benefit from state-of-the-art laboratories and digital teaching and learning facilities within the UCLan Engineering Innovation Centre.  

Entry Requirements 2017/18

96 Points at A2 including Maths; General Studies accepted
BTEC Extended Diploma: Merit, Merit, Merit
Pass Access Course: 96 UCAS Points including 15 Level 3 credits in Maths Modules at Distinction
International Baccalaureate Diploma: 26P including HL5 in Maths
IELTS: 6.0 with no component lower than 5.5
GCSE: Grade C including Maths & English or equivalent

UCLan requires all undergraduate applicants to have a minimum attainment of five GCSEs at grade C and above, or equivalent, (including Maths and English). In 2017 and beyond we will view the new Grade 4 as being equivalent to a C grade and will therefore require students to achieve GCSE Grade 4 or above. However, if the subject is relevant to our degree programme and requires a higher GCSE grade (e.g. GCSE B grade), and/or includes a Professional body that governs the entry requirements, Grade 5 or above may be required.

Further Information

This course is founded on strong industry links and taught by experienced, professionally qualified staff. You will benefit from UCLan’s investment in the Engineering Innovation Centre - due to open in 2018. An optional industry placement is available, furthering your professional knowledge and increasing your employability. You will have the opportunity to engage with live projects including with high profile clients. You'll benefit from speakers from the Institution of Civil Engineering and related institutions and from workshops delivered by regional and national contributors. Field trips will be organised by tutors to visit examples of best practice projects.

You will have alternative routes to gain employment in a range of engineering disciplines, within either the broad area of civil engineering or specialist disciplines such as a structural engineer, transportation engineer, environmental engineer, or engineering hydrologist. As well as the option to further your specialisation with a postgraduate course, you can also diversify into the academic world of research and development, within universities or work for dedicated established research organisations within the built environment.

Industry Links

Our civil engineering course is founded on strong industry links and taught by experienced, professionally qualified staff. Courses relating to the built environment have been taught at the University for over a century.

Professional Accreditation

The course is being accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institution of Highways Engineers. When accredited it will fully meet the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partially meet the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council, leading to membership of the listed Institutions.

Learning Environment and Assessment

The following will be studied during the first three years:

  •  The properties of fluids and their applications 
  •  How engineering structures and systems work 
  •  Sustainable use of resources on projects 
  •  Design, construction and usage of civil engineering systems. 
The MEng course is fully designed to meet the requirements for Chartered status of the Engineering Council.
