Research

We are a research active School. We believe that research – in its various forms – is central to who we are and what we do.

Some of the subjects in the new School, such as English Literature and Language, have been long established as academic disciplines; while others, such as Journalism, are comparative newcomers to academic research. But our staff are active in both areas (and many others) – researching and writing books, journal articles and conference papers.

We are also committed to applied research, particularly in partnership with industry. For example, the proliferation of the Web and digital technology poses serious questions for mainstream media companies, who see their positions as monopoly media providers being eroded.  The BBC, Times Online, Sky News are just three of the news organisations working with us on our current MELD project, exploring how digital content will be produced in the future.

Research is essential to the School because it informs our thinking, stimulates our curiosity, confounds untested certainties, exposes assumptions – and is fun to do.
