The "Commemorating Abolition" project
The "Commemorating Abolition" project aims to raise public awareness of the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Britain,to be celebrated in 2007. The project is a student-centred initiative which follows on from the groundbreaking work of the Slave Trade Arts Memorial Project (STAMP) in Lancaster. Students will learn important employability skills such as web-design, events management and curatorial skills during the lifetime of the project. Sponsored by the Centre for Teaching Employability in the Humanities (CETH), here at UCLAN, the project hopes to create useful materials and enlivening events to complement other celebrations for the Bicentenary. Particular focus will be on the visual arts and on celebrating memorials to both victims of the slave trade and to those (both well-known and anonymous) who helped to end it.
