Picking a suitable topic

We can offer supervision in a wide range of topics of English local  and history from 1500 to the present day.  We are not restricted to the North West of England as research expertise within the department is wide ranging.  However, if your proposed research is related to a single family then you will need to demonstrate that this has academic merit.  At PhD level, research needs to form an original contribution to knowledge, so it will have to be well-grounded in a wide range of academic literature and will need a sound methodology.  Topics are negotiable and we will help you to select an appropriate topic.

Admissions criteria

Normally we would expect applicants to have a first degree at lower second or above or completion of our online Advanced Certificate in Family History with an overall mark of 60% or above.

Attendance

It is not necessary to attend the University to register for a post graduate research degree, although you would normally be expected to attend the University for the final examination of your thesis/dissertation.  We can offer supervision to you anywhere in the world vie email/telephone/web support, and we will also be able to provide access to many library resources via the internet.

Application procedure

Before applying please contact Dr Andy Gritt to discuss your idea.

When you are ready to apply there are two things you will need to do:
