About us
Altogether we take about 40 students onto the single honours courses and about the same on combined honours each year. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and we welcome applications from those with non-traditional qualifications. We offer a taught MA in History and supervise research degrees up to PhD. There are currently eight full-time members of staff plus four with part-time contracts. We, too, have a range of backgrounds, some having worked in museums, school teaching or other occupations before entering academia, others have spent most of their time in higher education. We are all research-active, with World-class publications in some areas. We have good connections with a number of local museums and heritage sites, and have a formal relationship with the People’s History Museum in Manchester. We contribute to the activities of local societies and organisations, while The Institute of Local and Family History runs a regular series of workshops and conferences for wider audiences.
