Clinical Skills Laboratories

The clinical skills laboratories offer seven skills laboratories, two patient consultation rooms and a simulated flat for use by students studying within the School of Health

Students using the Clinical Skills facilities

The College of Health and Wellbeing currently have several hi-specification skills laboratories that are stocked with a vast range of equipment to help you develop your clinical skills. The labs represent a realistic clinical environment which helps to socialise you to your future profession on a practical level. The labs provide a safe environment in which you can assimilate your theoretical knowledge into practical skills that you will continue to practice in your clinical placements. Additionally, we run weekly skills practice sessions that any student can book onto for extra experience and you are welcome to attend these even when out on placement.

All our laboratories are equipped with simulated oxygen and suction at each bed area and ceiling mounted cameras allowing the filming and recording of examinations and simulation sessions. In addition there are interactive whiteboards in all labs except GR102B which has a PC.

Gr102a This room is equipped with a bed that has simulated oxygen and suction in that area. There is also a selection of anatomical models. This laboratory also contains a ceiling mounted camera allowing the filming and recording of examinations and simulation sessions.

Gr102b is largest skills laboratory, comprising a simulated ward area with eight bays and beds. This room is ideally suited for training larger groups of students, for example resuscitation training, moving and handling, drug administration, asepsis, hand washing and personal care. The area has six nursing manikins for practical training purposes. The laboratory is equipped with simulated oxygen and suction at each bed area. This room is ideally suited for teaching larger groups. This laboratory has the equipment required for the purposes of moving and handling and also contains four ceiling mounted cameras allowing the filming and recording of examinations and simulation sessions.

Gr109 Pre-hospital care. This skills laboratory contains the simulated ambulance which is built to scale, equipped as an operational vehicle and is used to reflect a realistic working environment. Due to the restricted working space in an ambulance there is a camera allowing students and staff to view the activity within the ambulance during a simulated skills session. These images are displayed on the large screen within the skills laboratory. The area has six patient transfer trolleys accommodating six high specification manikins.

Gr111 laboratory has equipment to allow the lab to be set as a simulated theatre for the teaching and acquisition of practice skills in the care of the critically ill. The area has two beds, operating table, ventilator and transfer trolley. Specialist equipment in this laboratory includes cardiac arrest trolley and electrocardiograph monitoring. Simulated oxygen and suction are also available here. The laboratory can be used for all other clinical skills and also has a ceiling mounted camera allowing the filming and recording of examinations and simulation sessions.

Gr115: Neonatal and paediatric nursing. The laboratory is equipped with two hospital beds and a neonatal care incubator with several infant and paediatric manikins available.

Gr117: This laboratory is a dedicated simulation suite. It is equipped with two adult interactive high tech simulated manikins, SimMan and MetiMan. The laboratory also has two infant and one child Emergency Care Simulator manikins. All these manikins have realistic physiological models which can be pre-programmed to create life-like medical scenarios. The manikins are controlled from a separate room with one-way windows and they can respond automatically through dedicated software to clinical interventions, creating realistic learning experiences.

Gr177 : This laboratory is mainly used for teaching midwifery skills and contains specialist manikins, anatomical models and equipment required for this specialty. It is equipped with an adult interactive high tech simulated manikin, SimMom. This manikin is an advanced full body interactive birthing simulator that can respond automatically through dedicated software to clinical interventions, creating realistic learning experiences. The laboratory has two birthing hospital beds with two life-size birthing manikins along with a neonatal resuscitaire.

Gr179 & Gr181 are both equipped as GP’s consultation rooms with desk, examination couch and small equipment to carry out a patient assessment.

Gr182 is a simulated flat with a living area and small bedroom. This flat is ideal for small simulation scenarios reflecting a home environment.
