MA Magazine Journalism Graduate Tom Ballard talks about his UCLan experience.
"I wanted to get a vocational qualification that would give me the tools needed to move into the magazine industry and UCLan offered more scope for creativity within the course than any other university I looked into.
Having excelled at the work placement during my course – thanks to the thorough grounding I'd had at UCLan – I was asked to return to the same publication, Triathlon Plus at Future Publishing, to work as a full-time freelancer.
This led to an offer of a job as Staff Writer on the magazine, officially beginning in January 2012. Following a successful year with the magazine and its website, TriRadar.com, I have now been made Senior Writer in charge of the magazine's front section as well as the reviews section. I also write features and reviews. I am also responsible for TriRadar.com on a day-to-day basis, deciding on editorial strategy and overseeing the site's redesign.
The MA in Magazine Journalism really offers everything you need to hit the ground running in the industry and work at the standards expected of those who have been in engaged in journalism for years. The excellent quality of teaching, expert speakers and furious shorthand classes! I also made lifelong friends despite the short time spent at UCLan."
