In December 2012 a group of students and staff from the School of Social Work travelled to Germany to attend an international conference on Social Exclusion in Europe and find out more about the impact of reunification in post-communist Berlin. The School’s Erasmus partners at Ostfalia University in Braunschweig put together a series of highly informative visits and lectures.
The visit forms parts of the School’s commitment to internationalisation. The cost to the students was subsidised by the UCLan Travel Bursary scheme. Student feedback regarding the visit was really positive, highlighting what a fantastic learning experience it had been. One student commented: “The ‘Social Exclusion in Europe’ talk was very engaging and allowed me to gain a wider picture as to what is going on away from the UK. I was able to compare practice in Germany and England as well as take new ideas on board. This is an experience you cannot get out of a textbook or journal and I am humbled at having the opportunity."
Students from Ostfalia visited UCLan in March 2013 for a reciprocal visit to local social care provision and whilst here, attended the School of Social Work International event on 13th-14th March.
