Samantha Davis

BSc (Hons) Building Surveying, 2002 / Master of Business Administration, 2008

Samantha Davis graduated from UCLan in 2002 with a degree in Building Surveying. She also completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with us in 2008.

Samantha is currently a Divisional Director for AA Projects Ltd, based at their head offices in Sale. In this role Samantha is in charge of the Strategic Management Team, helping to provide strategic solutions and change programmes in order to support the business needs of the clients.

Thinking back on her chosen career path Samantha said: “I had been interested in buildings and how they were put together from an early age and I felt that a degree in building surveying would lead me to a career which I was passionate about.”

During her studies, Samantha opted to do a sandwich year and worked with Lancashire County Council. Upon completing this she was offered part -time employment with the Council, which she did during the final year of her studies. This eventually led to her being offered a full-time contract on graduation.

Following this, Samantha became a Chartered Surveyor whilst working in a graduate position with Manchester based firm EC Harris. She then moved to the firm Capita Symonds for eight years, where she built her way up from a Chartered Building Surveyor to the Head of Property for the Blackburn office. Talking about her time at EC Harris Samantha said: “It was here that I decided to complete my MBA in order to support my day-to-day managerial duties including financial reporting, business development, marketing and leadership.”

Thinking back to her time at UCLan, Samantha said that one lasting memory would be working on a project in her final year which brought together students from a number of different courses. She said: “This helped  to give me a real understanding of what it would be like to work in a design team and it also provided me with a real appreciation of the different roles and how they all fit together in order to deliver the final output.

“I would advise anyone thinking of a career in property to consider undertaking a building surveying degree.  I have worked on projects all over the country from small scale refurbishments to multi-million pound projects. I have worked as either a member of the design team or as lead technical advisor. No two days within the property consultancy field is ever the same and provides exciting new challenges and a variety of sectors in which to work.”
