WASET conference in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry

The World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology conference in Dubai was attended in January by a fourth year MPharm student, Dileh Ali. She reported on a presentation focused on the use of nanotechnology in pharmacy and related health fields which involved the application of silica nanoparticles in the early detection of prostate cancer, aiming to produce a reliable diagnostic screen using lanthanide complexes entrapped in nanoparticles. Dileh described her attendance at the conference as a “tremendous opportunity to meet scientists who were a source of knowledge and motivation.”

18th Congress of the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists

The European Association of Hospital Pharmacists conference in Paris was attended in March by a first year MPharm student, Muhammad Ismail. The congress focused on the theme of “improving patient outcomes – a shared responsibility,” highlighting that role of the pharmacist as part of a healthcare team. It included presentations on how effective communication and multidisciplinary teamwork can improve patient outcomes, how the prevention of critical incidents is an issue for different disciplines and that analysis of these events is key to understanding and prevention of recurrence. Muhammad commented: “the experience increased my knowledge of hospital pharmacy immensely, and I was able to relate what I had learnt to my hospital placement a week later.”
