Advertising graduate Nathan had always considered himself a creative person. He told us why he chose to study his degree: “I was sold on the thinking side of the advertising course as opposed to the visual aspect most graphics courses offered.”
After graduating in 2016, he worked on book crits and went on placements at leading advertising agencies TBWA and BJL, before being offered a full-time job at Havas Lynx. Nathan now works as a Junior Creative where he comes up with imaginative concepts and creative writing for large pharmaceutical brands which can feature across a range of mediums, including print, digital and TV. The pride in seeing his work in the real world is one of Nathan’s greatest achievements since graduation.
Talking about the journey that brought him to his current position, Nathan commented: “I got my book in front of as many people as I could. I used this time to build a small network of connections and advice of what I needed to improve. I was hired at Havas on the strength of my work and a recommendation from an old tutor. Previous placements also showed I had relevant industry experience.”
Nathan’s lasting memories of his time at UCLan include the friends he made and the chance to visit the UCLan Cyprus Campus when he participated in a week-long leadership programme.
A key feature of his studies was the chance to communicate with guest speakers and real industry experts. During his final year a variety of Creative Directors, Art Directors and Copywriters from agencies including 101 London, Waggledance, and WJPM set Nathan and his course mates live briefs and gave valuable critique to their projects.
His advice for future students would be: “Don’t let setbacks get you down. Keep in touch with any industry people you speak to. You never know when it may come in handy. Never be scared to send someone an email. The worst that could happen is they ignore it.”
